I love old style golf courses. This one has a great mix of hole lengths. I had to use clubs I haven't used in a long time. Most holes are "flat" but few lies are level.

Tilden is a challenging, fun course with lots of variety. Par threes test length and accuracy and the lush tree growth punish the errant drive. A well maintained public course. Winter play can be real marshy and the course does not always drain well.

I play this course a lot in the fall, winter, and spring but usually avoid it in the summer as at this time of year the pace of play can be very slow. However on this particular day the pace was quite brisk and the course was in beautiful shape. Its a lovely course, fairways lined by giant old redwoods, some nice elevation changes, dramatically different from blue tees on many holes. As for the price I paid $36 including cart which is a great deal - this deal was to be had by going online to golfzing.com and choosing a tee time - normally on a weekday it would be $45, on a Fri/Sat/Sun it would be $55 - still a good deal I believe for this course but an exceptional value at $36.

I really like this course but...after it rains give it a few days to dry out, the fairways stay wet and everything plugs. Summertime can be very foggy in the morning. Layout is nice, greens are good. Real nice patio area for drinks after golf. Price is too high, they don't have many specials.

Would travel: 10-20 Miles, Not Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again

Best in Spring-Fall, still has drainage problems (a few muddy fairways) during rainy season, Nov.-Mar. Every hole is distinct with beautiful vistas, no houses, and each hole has some kind of challenge to make you think about your shots. Over half the greens are elevated or have significant dropoffs on the front and sides. It is not a boring course. Monthly passes for seniors (55+) for play M-F is the lowest cost in the area, now about $105/month - this is not a typo. Weather is always temperate, both summer and winter, with few exceptions. Maintenance and course condition is much improved over the past couple of years. Some significant hilly holes, but a majority are reasonably flat. Terrace much improved with views of several holes and delightful to enjoy a drink on a nice day. Clubhouse is fine.

Tee boxes were in terrible shape -- with plastic mats required on some of them. Several tees had little grass available.

The after effects from aeration were apparent on 5 or 6 greens; however, most rolled fairly true.

Tilden Park is a short course, but a great layout with many trees and other challenges along the way. I will likely restrict my use of the course to May thru October when growing season is at its best.

Depending on month of the year, the fairway can be a challenged. October-April: fairway is half decent with mud spots in many part of fairway and rough because this course is located in the mountain terrain (bay area rains didn't help). During cold weather, 32*-50*F, you might find frost delay or worst frozen tee box and fairway (can be fun depending on you mood). This course is an excellent course in term of both course design layout and challenge aspect of the game. Many long PGA equivalent par 3 from BLUE tee. Many troubles, big tress, creeks, and OB to keep good golfer stays on their toes. The course overall is well designed and one tough gorilla to beat. Warning this course is only worth-while if you play during the Spring + Summer + Fall Seasons .... Winter is a no go because occasionally you'll have frost delay and the ground is all frozen. Certainly fun to see 350 yard drives, but not if you can't get the tee into the ground at the tee box.

Tilden Park is one of my favorite California spots. The park is located in the Berkley Hills to the East of Berkley. The drive up the hills to the park affords terrific views of San Francisco Bay. Tilden Park Golf Course is an excellent course and is located within the park. The course overall is well designed and and a real challenge. A lot of dog-leg holes and many trees to create troubles. Warning I only recommend this course if you play it during the Spring + Summer + Fall Seasons .... Winter is a no go because occationally you will have frost delay and the frozen ground. This is an example of the many micro-climates you have in California. Winter at Tilden can be iffy, yet optimum for courses 20 miles away.
